I've been fortunate to spend two decades in the fields of HR and Administration. In that time one of the biggest lessons I've learned is that what we read in a textbook is often very different from what we face in the real world. A single 'best practice' rarely exists because the right approach varies so much from one organization to another.
My core experience has been a deep dive into the member-driven bylaws-focused culture of cooperatives. This has given me a unique perspective to simultaneously study and understand how HR practices are managed in other worlds from the speed-and-profit-driven private sector to the formal compliance-heavy structures of public organizations.
This understanding is why I'm so passionate about this
topic. Theory can define workforce planning but it doesn't prepare you for the
real-world conversation when your budget is suddenly cut. What works for a
flexible startup is completely different from the formal bylaws-driven process
in a cooperative. The market is also constantly changing and how we apply new
trends depends entirely on the organization we serve.
That is why I'm starting this new series named: HR in
Practice: A Guide for the Rising HR Professionals.
What is the series on "HR in Practice"?
My purpose here isn't to present myself as an expert but
simply to share what I've learned about navigating these different
environments.
HR in Practice: A Guide for the Rising HR Professionals is a
series focused on the practical application of HR. This series is intended as a
general guide that you as a rising professional can consider while executing
your functions.
We won't just define "Selection." We'll ask:
- How does your selection process change when you're bound by strict bylaws?
- How do you build a fair process when your manager just wants to hire fast?
This is not a collection of abstract theories. It is a
playbook of practical strategies processes, applicable approaches and real-world challenges.
Who is This Series For?
I'm writing this for the "Rising HR Professionals."
This isn't about your job title it's about your mindset.
This is for you if:
- You are new to HR and want to learn how to adapt your skills to your company's culture.
- You are in a junior role and you want to learn how to provide strategic solutions not just administrative answers.
- You want to be a trusted advisor who understands that the "right" answer always depends on the context.
How Will It Work?
My idea is to follow the logical flow of the employee
lifecycle. In each article the central theme will be how our approach must
adapt.
Topics to be covered:
- Strategic HR Planning: How to plan for a cooperative's long-term stability vs. a startup's rapid growth.
- Talent Sourcing: Why sourcing for a public body (requiring public ads) is different from a private company (using head-hunters).
- Selection & Interviewing: Designing a process that is both effective and compliant with your organization's specific rules.
- Offers & Negotiation: How to handle offers when you work in a flexible open-negotiation culture vs. a fixed pay-scale structure.
- Performance Management: How to build a fair and effective appraisal system.
- Training & Development: Linking learning to organizational goals.
- Compensation & Benefits: Managing payroll and benefits in different structures.
- Employee Relations & Engagement: Building a positive work environment.
- Separation & Exit: Handling the exit process professionally and compassionately.
- Any HR topic what I feel important while presenting this series.
An Invitation to Share
I'm genuinely looking forward to sharing these insights. But
this is a two-way street. I am just as interested in learning from all of you.
The best way to understand these variations is to share our experiences.
Please share your own stories your perspectives and your
questions in the comments. Let's make this a community where we can all learn
and grow together.
